🌊 Why Madagascar Is a Sea Turtle Hotspot
Madagascar’s tropical waters are home to two endangered species of sea turtles: the Green Turtle and the Hawksbill Turtle. These gentle marine creatures feed in the seagrass meadows, rest among coral reefs, and nest along the island’s beaches.
But like many species worldwide, Madagascar’s turtles face increasing threats from plastic pollution and habitat loss to illegal poaching and climate change.
That’s where you come in.
What You’ll Do as a Turtle Conservation Volunteer
Volunteers in our Turtle Conservation Program play a direct role in protecting these vulnerable species. Depending on the season and weather conditions, your tasks may include:
- In-Water Surveys: Snorkel through clear waters to observe turtles in their natural habitat. You’ll help identify individuals by photographing the unique scale patterns on their faces — a non-invasive method used globally.
- Seagrass and Habitat Monitoring: Track the health of the turtles’ feeding grounds and document changes over time.
- Beach Patrols & Nest Monitoring: During nesting season, volunteers may monitor nesting activity and support local protection efforts.
- Data Collection & Entry: Contribute to long-term conservation research by recording sightings, behaviours, and environmental data.
- Environmental Education: Help raise awareness among local communities and visitors about the importance of turtle conservation.
No prior marine biology experience? No problem. You’ll receive training and work alongside experienced field staff and conservationists.
What It’s Like Living and Volunteering in Madagascar

You’ll stay at a coastal volunteer camp, living simply and sustainably in shared beach huts just steps from the ocean. Evenings are spent watching the sunset, playing beach volleyball, or sharing stories under the stars.
It’s an experience that’s as grounding as it is unforgettable.
